As birthdays go, it was an unusual one: I spent the afternoon of my 42nd birthday in a breastfeeding workshop in a Dublin maternity hospital. Of the dozen or so of us there, we were keen to learn the ropes, having heard rumours that breastfeeding might prove to be a challenge.
By then, I was a woman of myriad accomplishments. How hard could this be? The consultant looked at me admiringly as I held my test baby – an inanimate doll – in a rugby hold. “Wow, you’re a natural,” she cooed. “You got this!”
